After you've researched the type of vehicle you want and know the retail price range, you can set your own price range. Then, you are ready to head to the dealership. When you set your price range ahead of time you are more likely to stick to it. Some salespeople will respect your budget while others will try to push you out of your financial comfort zone. Stand firm and don't let yourself be talked into more than you can afford.

Please be advised that the figure you get off the Internet or even from the Kelley Blue Book may be quite different from the figure you are quoted by the dealership.
